Bowery Gallery is pleased to present recent work by Thaddeus Radell, whose darkly luminous paintings evoke journeys through landscapes of the unconscious. From the artist’s richly layered surfaces—broadly trowelled in places, elsewhere delicately incised—emerge visions of the river Acheron and the ferryman Charon, who in Dante’s Inferno transports souls to the underworld. Elements within these figure compositions, whether humans, horses or boats, appear and disappear within the atmospheric depths, while bits of embedded burlap suggest a ragged dimension beyond paint.
