A night of championing women in theatre took place on Friday at the TimesCenter, as the League of Professional Theatre Women honored Phylicia Rashad with a Lifetime Achievement Award during their annual awards ceremony.
The Theatre Women Awards are the only awards, on the Great White Way and beyond, dedicated to promoting the theatrical work of women and their contributions to the field. Other honorees include Linda Winer, former Chief Theatre Critic for Newsday, who received the the LPTW Special Award, and Cricket S. Myers, who received the Ruth Morley Design award.
Audience members were instructed not to turn off their phones, and they kept up a flurry of hashtag-driven social media activity throughout the night. A new hashtag, #OneMoreConversation, was introduced at the end of the night, which encouraged theaterfolk to make their networks more robust, and interview one woman for a job, in light of the continued lack of gender parity in the field.
Guests were treated to performances, and champagne and treats at the end of the night.
